Works In Progress II unfolds the idea of community, exploring its essence through the lens of collaboration. Fourteen artists and design studios have been paired together to make a single composition: a screen. An object in itself yet inherently spatial, a screen is an intervention in space. Its power lies in defining its environment, dictating how we perceive our surroundings. Screens help us frame new perspectives.
Representing a range of approaches to materiality, construction, and presentation, the exhibition features seven co-created screens from Bay Area-based studios. A collision of independent processes and practices, each screen is a unique collaborative artifact. With open minds, artists turned to the properties of local stone, carved porcelain, meshed mycelium, reclaimed barrel wood, translucent paper, and chickpea to guide them. Singular works from each of the fourteen artists are woven around the screens as guiding pillars of each practice.
Together, a conversation emerges in the space between individual expression and creative intersection.
